Fidya

What is Fidya?

Fidya is a compensation payment made when a person is unable to fast during Ramadan due to valid reasons such as illness, old age, or pregnancy, and cannot make up the missed fasts later. It is a way to fulfill one's religious obligation when fasting is not possible.

Who Must Pay Fidya?

Fidya is required for those who:

  • Are unable to fast due to chronic illness or medical conditions
  • Are elderly and physically unable to fast
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding and cannot fast safely
  • Cannot make up missed fasts due to ongoing health issues

Amount of Fidya

The amount of Fidya is typically equivalent to feeding one poor person for each missed day of fasting. This is usually calculated as the cost of one meal per day. The exact amount may vary based on local food prices and should be sufficient to provide a nutritious meal.

Difference Between Fidya and Kaffarah

It is important to distinguish between Fidya and Kaffarah:

Fidya: Paid when one cannot fast due to valid reasons and cannot make up the fasts later. The amount is typically one meal per missed day.

Kaffarah: A penalty paid when one intentionally breaks a fast without a valid reason. The amount is much higher - typically feeding 60 poor people or fasting for 60 consecutive days.
