Where your donation goes

The generous support of our donors has allowed us to reach millions of people in need. Behind that is a massive global aid operation and a huge amount of trust. It is an investment of trust on the part of our donors—or amanah—that we take seriously at Islamic Relief.

When we promise your donation is in safe hands, we mean we work very hard to ensure you can trust us to use your donation in the most effective way to ease the suffering of others. You can trust us to deliver aid programmes of the highest quality that bring immediate relief and long-term benefit to people's lives. You can also trust that your money goes where we say it is going, and that we follow the Islamic, legal and good practice standards you would expect of the world's largest independent Muslim charity.

Where your money goes

Your donation is safe in our hands because we are transparent about how much we raise and where it is spent. For every £1 you donate to Islamic Relief, 90p is spent on helping people in need, 7p goes towards raising more funds and 3p is spent on admin costs.

Admin covers overhead expenses like rent for offices and equipment, safeguarding vulnerable people, training staff, auditing our accounts, ensuring cyber security and complying with our legal obligations as a charity. Fundraising covers communicating with donors, appeals, events and activities. For every £1 we spend on fundraising, we make many times that back, allowing us to reach even more people in need.

Information on our costs and financial accounts is published every year in our Annual Report and Financial Statements, which are independently audited and published on our website.

Why we don't use a 100% donation policy

A '100% donation policy' or 'no admin costs' is a method used by some charities to imply that 100% of a donor's money goes straight to those in need. When compared to charities who are transparent about their admin fees, this can look like the superior choice—but it can be misleading.

Any charity performing life-saving work is almost certainly employing the relevant means to do it: staff, vehicles, buildings, and more—all of which cost money. This is why a 100% donation policy is not realistic, and why we encourage donors to focus instead on the question: "How effectively is my donation being used?"

For every £1 donated to Islamic Relief, just 3p is used to cover admin costs. A further 7p goes towards raising more funds for those in need. The remainder—90p—goes directly towards our life-saving work. Admin fees help us deliver aid on the ground: needs assessments, transport, local offices, salaries for staff and expenses for volunteers, and monitoring and evaluating impact. Without admin, our work simply would not be possible.

In His divine wisdom, Allah (SWT) decreed that one of the eight people eligible to receive Zakat are the administrators of Zakat (al 'amilina alayha). We are accountable to Allah, to our donors and to all those we serve. We are committed to transparency and to using your donations in the most efficient and effective way.
