What is Zakat Al Fitr?
Zakat Al Fitr, also known as Fitrana, is a charitable donation that must be given before the Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan. It is obligatory for every Muslim who has the means to do so.
Purpose of Zakat Al Fitr
The purpose of Zakat Al Fitr is to purify the fasting person from any indecent act or speech and to help the poor and needy celebrate Eid with dignity. It ensures that everyone can enjoy the festivities of Eid, regardless of their financial situation.
Who Must Pay Zakat Al Fitr?
- Every Muslim who has the means to do so
- It is paid on behalf of oneself and dependents (spouse, children, etc.)
- It must be given before the Eid prayer
Amount of Zakat Al Fitr
The amount is equivalent to approximately one Sa' (a measure of weight) of staple food items such as wheat, barley, dates, or raisins. In modern terms, this is typically equivalent to the cost of one meal per person.
